The Compliance Minute

Hello team Mission Point!  My name is Emery Dumas, and I am the interim Corporate Compliance Officer for Mission Point Healthcare Services (and also the RDO for our assisted living communities!)

I am a licensed nursing home administrator and am certified in healthcare compliance.  I’m a nerd for rules, regulations, policy and procedure, and regulatory compliance!  If there is anything I can do for you, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

This monthly article will focus on all thing’s compliance.  It’s a great place to learn about different compliance topics and it’s my hope that you will become more familiar with our company compliance plan and its policy and procedures.

So, what exactly is Corporate Compliance?  Corporate compliance is all about companies, their em

ployees, and those they contract with conducting themselves in al egal and ethical manner so as to conform to various laws, and healthcare rules and regulations.  Many healthcare companies build their corporate compliance plan based of the Office of Inspector General’s (OIG) voluntary guidance.  In addition (and probably no surprise to many!) there is also a federal regulation (F-895) that requires nursing homes to have a compliance and ethics program that has been reasonably designed, implemented, and enforced so that it is effective in preventing and detecting criminal, civil, and administrative violations under the Act, and in promoting quality of care.  In a nutshell, compliance is all about doing the right thing.

If you’d like to learn more about corporate compliance, and how it relates to nursing homes – please visit the OIG website at Office of Inspector General | Government Oversight | U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (hhs.gov).  You can also learn about the Federal regulation known as F-895 at Appendix PP – November 22, 2017 (cms.gov)
