Resident Activities

The Coffee Shop – Open every day, the coffee shop is the perfect place for residents to grab a cup of coffee and enjoy all the amenities coffee shops have to offer! Local newspapers and a variety of magazines are always available alongside local television access for those who enjoy keeping up with the daily buzz. For residents and their families who are computer savvy, there is a public computer with broadband internet and web cam. There’s even an aviary for the bird watching enthusiasts!

Tranquility Center – The Tranquility Center focuses on providing a calm and quiet place for rejuvenation and holistic healing efforts. With the assistance of nurses and therapy staff, residents can enjoy procedures such as massage, aromatherapy, and deep breathing exercisers that work to control the side effects of illnesses and promote homoeostasis. Those with Alzheimer’s and other degenerative illnesses can especially benefit from regular visits to the Tranquility Center.

Lending Library – In our lending library, we offer hundreds of literature selections in a variety of genres to appeal to anyone who enjoys a good book to read. From non-fiction and fiction, we have everything from adventure to romance and beyond in our very own library. We’re also open to trading or accepting donation books if interested; just stop by our activities office.

Theater Room – Open daily for residents, the theater room gives residents a front row seat to watch a new or classic movie, right from home.

The Salon – For residents who wish to have further treatments such as coloring, permanents, cut, or wash and sets, they can book an appointment at The Salon. The Salon employs a licensed hairdresser who visits Bayside to provide these services.

The Dining Room – Bayside cooks its own meals in house and residents are welcome to visit the dining room to socialize and eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Rehabilitation Services

With the cooperation of the Bayside Village medical staff, U.P. Rehab Services offers:

Physical Therapy to maximize the resident’s range of motion, ability to move about, and perform everyday tasks. Physical therapy is also used to relieve pain, ensure proper recovery from a physical injury, and minimize the effects of common conditions such as arthritis.

Occupational Therapy to increase a resident’s independence and ability to care for themselves. For some residents, a stay at Bayside Village is only temporary while they recover from an injury or illness – occupational therapy helps make sure that once a resident is back to living in their own home, they can continue to do so safely.

Speech Therapy to promote the resident’s ability to communicate with others and maintain their mental health. Speech therapy focuses on maximizing the ability to express wants and needs, understand written and spoken word, and improve memory.

History of the Dr. Louis & Anne Guy Bayside Village

During the late 1990’s, a plan of action was developed to construct a new nursing home complex to allow for the decommissioning of the Winkler nursing home complex, which was quickly becoming outdated and prohibitively expensive to continue to operate. Support for this plan was primarily lead by Dr. Louis Guy and his wife Anne, both prominent local politicians.

Through contributions from the local community, state grants, and a major contribution from Dr. Louis & Anne Guy, arrangements to have the complex built were finalized in late 1999. Construction on the facility began in March of 2000 and was completed later that year. The facility features a 59-bed capacity, state of the art medical technology, and unique resident amenities the former Winkler complex did not have (including a full garden courtyard and a gazebo).

After construction was fully completed, the residents and staff of the Winkler complex (which is actually across the street from Bayside Village complex) were transferred to the new facility. Ownership of the complex was given to the Baraga County Memorial Hospital (BCMH) and is operated semi-independently of the hospital. (The Winkler complex remains decommissioned following the transfer and is still being considered for different redevelopment projects.)

The Dr. Louis & Anne Guy Bayside Village complex has been in continuous operation since its opening in 2000 and remains as the best elderly nursing care facility in Baraga county and is among the best elderly care facilities in the state of Michigan.
